Where’s the Agenda?
It’s hard to fathom a more lack-lustre political conversation than that surrounding the upcoming Federal election in Australia. There is of course an agenda about which the election should be being fought. Afghanistan (withdrawing from an unwinnable war); ‘local’ warming (focusing on responding to climate change for ourselves and not waiting for China, India and the US to go first); the public good (why privatisation cannot deliver public value); clean technology (now and not later); and creative urban design (creating great cities not good ones).
The spin doctors and the media will ensure that the real issues never hit Page One. And, as things stand, who cares who wins? Students know that current mainstream agendas are all tinsel and gloss.
But, unlike the ‘sixties, where are they when they are needed?
