For possibly the first time in Australian politics a Labor government has a left wing leader & a left wing deputy leader. Nathan Rees is now the Premier of New South Wales with Carmel Tebbut his Deputy and they have four big problems to solve – Public Transport, Electricity, Health and Education. The key link about these problem areas is they each have massive workforce problems both internally and in the unions relationship with the state government. Theoretically a left wing government that cares about the workers should be in a unique position to improve the working dynamics in each system.

Take for example the Railway Bus system which is crucial to overcoming the daily frustrations that afflict Sydney. During the Pope’s recent visit all of the delays and breakdowns disappeared so (unless you think it was a papal miracle) we know it can be done even with our current technology. It’s possible but it will take a change in the working dynamics of both State Rail and the buses and all parties will have to work at it. We need this new government to work with and transform our public transport network into working like it did during the Pope’s visit everyday – with the same workers and with the same resources. Does everyone in Sydney have to become a Catholic to get the trains system working better?

The point is the biggest change our public transport system needs is not expensive new capital assets but transforming our transport workforce to work at it’s best 99% of the time. If Nathan Rees and David Campbell, his Transport Minister, can avoid go-slow campaigns and win the union’s eager involvement they can do it. Remember, Nathan, most people in Sydney have the daily transport experience to see if your government works better than the old one.

Poor angry Belinda Neal. The Australian Labor MP may not be facing criminal charges but she's proved the best political punching bag in ages. This video is inspired by the infamous incident at Iguanas restaurant, and by the time she kicked an opponent in a soccer match and of course when she told Liberal MP Sophie Mirabella that evil thoughts would turn her unborn baby into a demon.  . . read more
A welcome back to former Australian Treasurer Peter Costello who has returned to parliament again to sit on the backbenches. He's been writing a book about the Howard years and his future is uncertain. . . read more

The Australian Labor government, that’s claiming to be green responsible, has saved $50 million by cutting solar panel rebates and given $500 million to the coal industry for research into carbon capture and sequestration and Peter Garrett, the Environment Minister, is going along with it. If it was real the coal industry would use its own money. The latest issue of The Monthly has a lead article written by John Birmingham which details the juggernaut that is Big Coal and the mammoth task in competing against it.

Reading it can give you a sense of hopelessness, a sense of powerlessness that is very similar to the experience people feel after talking to Peter Garrett’s office. People in the solar cell industry, people with “illegal” e-bikes who send in submissions that are never even acknowledged and writers like myself have all felt this. We know that real change needs micro steps as well as macro plans but Labor “environmentalists” are so glued to “the big picture” they can’t see how they are not only going backwards and disappointing us but also taking incentive away from real people to give to big corporations who will not deliver anything but profits to themselves. As the Oils once sang “Brave faces… fall silent… got those tears in their eyes”. Does it make sense to you, Peter?

It's been a week now since e-bikes were made illegal by the NSW Supreme Court and there has been no word, no contact from the Federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett (or from Penny Wong, or the NSW Govt) to the people caught up in this mess - Deborah Matheson who was originally convicted and Trevor Patrick whose business has been destroyed.

The simple point again is the environment needs as many people as possible to change from car use as soon as possible and that's what e-bikes (electric assisted bikes) are helping. The immediate reduction of CO2 creation is a Federal issue and past members of Federal Parliament have acted as human beings even if their party wants them to shut up. This issue will be taken to the Court of Appeal and Garrett, being a lawyer, could play his part in the legal team. Do I hear his people saying ‘he can't do that'? Yes, he can if he cares about things that matter. Does he? His office could have responded to the detailed submission that Trevor Patrick has sent them or at least ring him but they haven't.

In California the right wing Republican Governor is actually subsidizing the sale of e-bikes while here in Australia Labor governments are letting them be pushed off the road. The environment should be more important than the Supreme Court.

In this 2008 interview the questions are for Peter Garrett, the Australian Environment Minister, but are instead answered by Peter Garrett from 1987, the lead singer of Midnight Oil.  . . read more
Will Peter Garrett, the Australian Minister for the Environment, turn out to be the worst environmental joke of all time? His last stupidity was saying the solar cell rebate had to be cut back because it was popular and people were installing too many solar cells! What! That's the idea, Peter. We want the solar cell factories of Australia to be full up with orders not closed down from cancellations.

Economic efficiency requires a smooth constant increase in demand so that local suppliers and distributors can scale up gradually, cost effectively. When cheaper production methods become available we want our suppliers and distributors in place ready to increase sales (not in bankruptcy proceedings - that only helps the multinationals who of course might give the Labor Party big donations). Your lack of foresight and/or ability to make Labor think about it's micro actions makes us have such cynical thoughts.

You now have a chance to change our impressions of you. In NSW a country magistrate has fined somebody $500 for riding a non-polluting e-bike without it being registered because the Road & Transport Authority classifies it as a pedal bike which it is. There are maybe 10,000 of these across Australia all reducing CO2 pollution day in day out. They've now been ordered off the roads. A State matter?  Peter, you know the NSW Labor government is a bad joke in freefall that can't save itself much less do something good for the environment. And we all know that you know that. Step in, save all the e-bikes and start to save your own reputation.

Years from today, when the current financial crisis is over, historians are likely to agree that it would have been far better if the Bush administration had declared a state of emergency earlier in the process so that the necessary steps could have taken to avoid a complete financial meltdown. The media could have been used to bring the American people up to date on market-related developments and educated in the bizarre language of structured finance. Knowledge is power; and power can prevent panic.

Now we're in a terrible fix. People are scared and removing their money from the banks and money markets. This is intensifying the freeze in the credit markets and driving stocks into the ground like a tent stake. Meanwhile, our leaders are caught in the headlights, still believing they can finesse their way through the biggest economic cataclysm since the Great Depression.

If something is not done to increase the flow of credit immediately, the stock market will tumble, unemployment will spike, and many businesses will grind to a standstill. We could be just days away from a severe shock to the system. Secretary of the Treasury Henry Paulson's $700 billion bailout does not focus on the fundamental problems and is likely to fail. At best, it puts off the day of reckoning for a few weeks or months. Contingency plans should be put in place so the country does not have to undergo post-Katrina bedlam. [More]

Re: Zeitgeist Addendum

Brilliant, mind-expanding stuff - even better than the original. The timing is perfect with the criminal U.S. financial system in a state of collapse and dragging the world down with it. These times of crisis lead to paradigm shifts - it is time for the Zeitgeist revolution.

1. Boycott Citibank, JP Morgan Chase & Bank of America and expose the corrupt Federal Reserve system

2. Boycott the mainstream media networks and protect the freedom of the internet

3. Boycott the military

4. Boycott energy companies - get off the grid, convert your car

5. Reject the current political system - the illusion of democracy in this corrupt monetary system is an insult to our intelligence

6. Spread the message, create critical mass

All the natural resources on the planet are the common heritage of all people. We can all live in abundance if we focus on real change - J.P.

Re: U.S. Economic Collapse? - From Michael Lerner

Economic collapse, I don't think so. The problem with all millenarium thinking is simply that things work at a much more glacial pace and are infinitely more complex than Michael/chicken little can get into the space of his squawk. Lehman Bros are not being singled out because they are perceived as "liberal" etc ; they are simple another of the bankstas who have hit the wall in the collapse of one of the history of money's ponzi schemes. The SCO (China)/India, resurgence of Russia and the emerging South American/Japan splintering of markets means the Wall Street pygmies now have to move out of the club house and actually perform because the game has really begun.

The banking cartel IS big news but its demise overdue and hoped for by most sentient human beings is not Economic collapse because Commerce is an essential human need and recruiter of human ability. Try one of the Economists from the USA who has been way prescient, calling these events at least two years ago to my knowledge. Dean Baker is occassionaly on mainstream media but they do not like him. The bloke really knows his stuff and while his focus is the USA his take on how Capitalism actually lurches about is fair dinkum info the world in general needs to factor in - Anthony Innes
