How the Year of the Woman reinforced the two most pernicious sexist stereotypes and actually set women back. By Amanda Fortini

In the past few weeks, Sarah Palin has been variously described as a diva who engaged in paperwork-throwing tantrums, a shopaholic who spent $150,000 on clothing, a seductress who provocatively welcomed staffers while wearing only a towel, and a “whack-job”—contemporary code for hysteric. Worse, she was accused by a suspiciously gleeful Fox News reporter named Carl Cameron of not knowing Africa was a continent, of being unable to name the members of NAFTA, indeed of being unable to name the countries of North America at all. (“But she can be tutored,” Bill O’Reilly told Cameron, as though speaking of a small child.) More significant than the dubious origins of these leaks, or the fact that the campaign that cried “sexism” at every criticism of its vice-presidential nominee was engaging in its own misogynistic warfare, is the fact that all of the allegations were so believable. After all, Palin had earned herself a reputation as, in the words of one Fox News blogger, “something of a policy ditz.”

Once upon a time, "sexism" used to mean that women were discriminated against and treated differently because of their gender.

Now, it means "criticizing Sarah Palin for any reason." Along with Elisabeth Hasselbeck, the old, white man who heads the Republican Party thinks it's so sexist to question $150,000 in clothing purchases, and whether it's legal for the GOP to buy such things. (80% of Guardian readers think not!)

It's probably also sexist to talk about Michelle Obama's cute outfit, except maybe not, because she's not Sarah Palin.

With all the hoopla yesterday about Sarah Palin's clothes, and how the RNC paid Jeff Larson to keep her looking better than Hillary Clinton (note to Hill... maybe if you dressed as nicely as Sarah, you might have won), one name that seems to escaped attention so far is Sarah's makeup consultant Tracy Thorp. Of course the "gotcha" cops who rode all over Joe "The Plumber" are undoubtedly going to start digging in Tracy "The Makeup Artist's" trash in Newbury Park, California (a suburb of LA), and they'll notice that her husband's company, Wilson Masonry, has a tax lien of $145,718. So it shouldn't be surprising that Tracy would jump at the chance to work for the McCain/Palin ticket and make a few extra bucks putting lipstick on the Alaska governor. With the economy the way it is, the Thorp/Wilson family needs all the help they can get.

Philaldelphia Flyers owner and major Republican donor, Ed Snider piped in the loudest music he could, but it couldn't camouflage the Philly boos snowing down on Republican VP nominee, Sarah Palin. And in what will be known forever in Philly history as the Palin Curse, it set the scene for one of the Flyer's worst opening night, opening period performances ever as they found themselves down to the New York Rangers, 4-0 before the first period was over.

In what should have been a sweet, memorable moment for Philadelphian Kathy O'Connell, voted the Flyers top hockey mom, Snider forced O'Connell to become part of a national embarrassment when Palin was bought onto the ice next to her accompanied by a barrage of boos from the Philly faithful.

So, I read today that the designer of Mattel's Barbie doll was obsessed with sex. Seriously? We need a book-length study to tell us that?

We in the land of feminist academics have been teaching the pernicious sexual politics of Barbie for years. The breasts that defy gravity, the hair, the long, long legs and of course the cruel, nipped in waist. Oh, don't forget the tiny clothes, the f*ck-me pumps, not to mention the well-equipped kitchens in every Barbie Dream House. The message of Barbie seems unambiguous to me.

Still, many students (and not a few colleagues) consistently resist seeing Barbie as a miniature sex toy, claiming instead that the doll was a good role model for little girls. (One could, after all, purchase a Barbie doll dressed as a doctor.) Or claiming, equally untenably, that toys had no impact on their ideas about gender roles or their own sexuality.

These students, mostly women, want to rescue Barbie, to protect their own childhoods from academic interrogations of pop culture and what those interrogations might reveal. That's understandable. Yet, many of these same students sit in my class pouring out of tank tops, squeezed into low-rise jeans, or tugging on mini-skirts so short they are nearly impossible to sit down in. That is, dressed like Barbie.

It's an experience I regularly have as a feminist critic of popular culture: a media event, book or news story demonstrates that I'm not wrong, my ideology is not based in "over analyzing," "hyper sensitivity," or "reading too much into things" (the three most common criticisms feminists tend to encounter). It's disappointing, frankly, to stumble so often upon evidence of society's sexism and to keep having to explain that it's there. Disappointing that Barbie was so obviously a sexed-up, misogynist, bad idea for little girls and to realize how thoroughly our culture embraced the toy anyway.

So, here we are again. Feminists were right: no one but a sex-obsessed man with a perverse idea of female anatomy would create a female toy like Barbie. And, as is too too often the case for feminists, being right isn't something to celebrate.

Re: The Dead Piled on Top of Each Other By Sami Abdel-Shafi in Gaza City

I think it's sad... The leaders of the 2 nations should think of the innocent people that they are killing. The war that is going on should be a boxing match between the two leaders, shouldnt have to kill innocent children for other peoples mistakes. I say, "Peace to 2 great nations Ps: think of others then yourself" God Bless - Pati
